Drawing people together & closer to God

Tips on doing devotion

As James says in James 1:22-25, God's word is a mirror. When we look into the mirror, we see an image of ourselves through God's word. And we will be blessed if we apply this word into our lives,

James 1:22-25
22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.
23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror
24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.
25 But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it--he will be blessed in what he does.

How do I read the word and get insight from God in His word?
The word of God is to be read and to be enjoyed. Try this ...

Romans 8:28
And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

1. Which word or phrase do you like in the verse?
2. Why?

This is the beginning of learning from the word and obtaining insights for yourself. If you have tried answering the questions above, you will realize that you can select an entire verse (or verses) from the bible and get your insight or narrow down to a word or a phrase. You can enjoy the verse and you can apply that verse into your life. Once you have enjoyed the verse, you can meditate on His word and carry that revelation with you for the day. It is like getting fresh manna from God directly ...
TIPS

  • Make your insights personal. It's easier to apply if you personalize it. Which part of the verse do you like?
  • E.g. I like the phrase "ALL THINGS work together"
  • Why? Because in the midst of my dire circumstances, God can make ALL THINGS work together for good for me
  • Please note : all verses should be read in context. But each word, each phrase or each passage can be expounded on by itself.

  • Notice that I've used the words "my" and "me". This is how we personalize the insights and make it applicable to us.

ANOTHER EXAMPLE

Philippians 3:8
Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ

Why do I like this verse?

I like this verse because whatever I have gained, or thought I have gained, is so little to what I can gain  through Christ. So I should not hold on so tightly to whatever it is that I have achieved, or even things that I feel that I have lost. Because in the light of eternity, all things are not so important to me if I gain Jesus.

These are just some examples.

In this place, we should feel comfortable entering our own insights. If you want your insights to be private to you only, you can enter your insights as your personal devotion. If you don't mind sharing your insights with others, join the public devotion and maybe your insights will help someone along the way.

Do not be afraid of entering your own insights. We are not here to judge one another but to share. Whatever you write or read, please ask the Holy Spirit to guide you. Let the Holy Spirit be your inner witness to everything that you do here.

John 16:13

But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth.
1 John 5:6
And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.
